May is Mental Health Awareness Month

Mental health affects every part of our lives—from our emotions and thoughts to our relationships and daily functioning. It influences how we think, feel, and act, how we handle stress, how we connect with others, and how we navigate everyday life.

Just like physical health, mental health can change over time, and everyone experiences challenges at some point. When mental health concerns arise, you’re not alone, and support is available. Because mental health needs are not one size fits all, support can look different for each person, from learning and self‑care tools to talking with a professional.

Learning more about mental health and knowing when and where to seek help are important steps toward feeling better and staying well. This month, we’re highlighting resources to help you learn, reflect, and get support.

Everyday Support

Mental Health Awareness Month is a reminder that caring for your mind isn’t just a one-time thing — it’s an everyday practice. Whether you’re navigating high stress, feeling the first signs of burnout, or just trying to stay steady through life’s ups and downs, support options below are available to employees and their family members.

Explore self-care tools, immediate and professional support, and leadership support for supporting others.

Just like our physical health, our mental health needs time and care. Making space for regular self‑care helps us slow down, feel grounded, and be more present for ourselves and the people around us.

  • Enroll in Headspace EAP to access:
    • A self-guided library of meditation and mindfulness exercises and guided programs to improve sleep, focus more, manage stress, and more.
    • One-on-one mental health coaching to help work on immediate goals - whether it's managing anxiety, navigating a life transition, sleeping restfully - and create an action plan with you to reach them.
  • Check-in with yourself and see how you're doing using the OK-ness Spectrum.
  • Explore tips, ideas, and resources to improve your well-being at work on Well-Being Central.

When you need additional support, you don’t have to navigate it alone. Resources are available to help you through challenging moments and everyday needs.

  • Find immediate support phone numbers and methods available 24/7.
  • Connect with professional counseling support.
    • Internal EAP: Meet with a licensed clinician who understands Mayo's culture and values.
    • Headspace EAP: Meet with a licensed clinician virtually by enrolling in the app or in-person by calling 855-271-7344.
  • Find support for everyday life needs related to financial stress, legal assistance, child and eldercare needs, transportation, food, housing access, and more through Headspace EAP Work Life Services.
  • Process emotional and/or physiological impacts after stressful, traumatic work events with a trained peer through the HELP Program.

Supporting someone else starts with listening, empathy, and knowing when to connect them to additional resources. You don’t have to have all the answers to offer support.

Lend an EAR Learning Modules

Developed by Mayo Clinic experts, the Lend an EAR Framework provides three steps to Empathize, Assess, and Refer colleagues through difficult situations. This on-demand training will give you critical skills to refer colleagues to the various resources Mayo Clinic has to offer for employees in need.

Resources to Have On-Hand for Your Team

There are several items you can order from the MSS Library to have on-hand in your work area. Use these resources to remind your colleagues of the services that are available to them. Please note: orders placed on the MSS library require your company and cost center numbers.

Talk About Mental Health in the Workplace

There isn’t just a single way to talk about mental health and people can’t take advantage of a benefit if they don’t know about it. Find EAP phone numbers, unique Headspace EAP site and effective resources to help you raise awareness of your benefit and reduce the stigma around mental health all year round.

Calendar Block Tips

Finding time is one of the biggest blockers to building a new habit. Help your staff carve out time to not only enroll in their Headspace benefit (if they haven’t yet) but begin to use the resources available to them. Simply copy and paste the pre-written calendar description of your choice into an internal chat, meeting agenda, or newsletter update to show your commitment to supporting mental well-being at Mayo Clinic.

Everyday Mindfulness - (a.k.a. Take 10)

Be on the lookout for a new [daily/weekly] calendar block to serve as a reminder to pause and reset during the workday. With Headspace as our mental health benefit, we have resources available to support. Use this time to explore exercises in the Headspace app or listen to a guided meditation to refresh your energy. Headspace has helped me stay consistent in caring for my well-being and I hope it helps you. Get started work.headspace.com/mayoclinic-member-enroll if you haven't already.

A Mindful Walk

You’ll notice a new [weekly or monthly] 30 minute calendar block coming to your inbox soon. Whether it's a lunch break or near the end of the day, this 30-minute calendar block can encourage people to get moving. Headspace has guided movement content to lead your people step-by-step. Wherever they are in the day, it's the perfect opportunity to take in the present moment and check-in with how they feel.

*Bonus: Designate a Quiet Space

Find Support through Leadership Consultations

The EAP provides consultation services to leaders (Administrators, Supervisors, Division Chairs, etc.) who want to investigate ways to improve common workgroup concerns. These consultations can be sought by individuals or by leadership teams. EAP Counselor will begin a needs assessment process with requestors and determine the feasibility and appropriateness of an EAP intervention. If the issues fall outside the EAP’s scope of practice or expertise, then the Counselor will assist in locating internal Mayo resources that may fit the identified needs.

What's Special in May

Live Events

We could all use a little calm in our busy schedules. This May, join the Headspace team for a 30-minute live meditation and a 1-hour quarterly workshop focused on navigating burnout. Additionally, join a special Brave Space session in collaboration with Headspace and the Internal EAP team focused on running on empty.

Live Meditation: Navigating Burnout

Gain a greater awareness of your body’s signals for stress and burnout. Join this live meditation to pause and learn practical tools to create healthy rhythms that restore, instead of deplete.

Beyond Burnout: Hit Reset and Reclaim Your Energy

Between work, home responsibilities, and an always-on culture, burnout is all too common. But by knowing your limits and making self-care a priority, you can protect your energy, focus, and well-being. In this session, led by mental health professionals, you’ll learn simple strategies to help you reset, recharge, and prevent burnout down the road.

Running on Empty

Many employees—especially those in patient-facing roles—are carrying a heavy load. Brave Space: Running on Empty is a one-hour, facilitated conversation designed to create space for honest reflection, shared experiences, and connection.

Hosted at Saint Mary's Hospital with a virtual option available, this session will be co-facilitated by a Headspace clinical leader and Mayo Clinic’s internal EAP counselor. Employees will have the opportunity to reflect on what drains their energy, recognize signs of depletion, and learn about supportive resources available through Mayo Clinic.

Support for Healthcare Worker Challenges

Caring for others can make it easy to overlook your own needs. Change, burnout, and blurred boundaries are common challenges in healthcare, and you don’t have to navigate them alone. Headspace offers supportive, on‑demand resources designed to help you stay grounded through transitions, recognize and address burnout, and protect your time and energy with healthy boundaries.

Explore guided exercises, short practices, and courses created with healthcare workers in mind, and discover everyday support for stress, mental health, and well‑being.
